After having studied art history and fine art at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, USA, and then at Strasbourg University in France, I trained as a painting restorer at the Institut für Technologie der Malerei in Stuttgart, Germany, becoming Diplom Restorator in 1978. I was Assistant to the Director at the Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge from 1978 to 2007 where I was a painting restorer and taught painting restoration. I edited several books for the Hamilton Kerr Institute mainly on the history of European painting materials and techniques and wrote my own book on the restoration of paintings in France in the eighteenth century before I began developing my own artistic interests.

(Painting Restoration before La Restauration: The Origins of the Profession in France, Hamilton Kerr Institute, University of Cambridge and Harvey Miller Publishers, 2012)

I travelled to China in 1986 and began painting with Chinese ink and watercolour shortly thereafter.

A book about my Chinese paintings which I have written was published and launched during the Cambridge Xu Zhimo Poetry & Art Festival in August 2018.

Ann Massing, A Journey Eastwards: Reflections on Chinese Ink and Watercolour Paintings, Cam Rivers Publishing 2018.

A Journey Eastwards is for sale for £9.99 at Cam Rivers Arts, 33 Trumpington Street, Cambridge, CB2 1QY

West Meets East in East Asian Brush Paintings by Ann Massing, Cam Rivers Publishing, 2023. This bilingual book in English and French, gives further insights into East Asian art and why I have become intrigued by a manner of painting that is not of my own culture.

Also available on amazon.com is a book about my mother's paintings which I wrote  Indiana Born: Barbara Rogers Houseworth (1925-2015) One Woman's Artistic Journey Through the 1050s and Beyond.

I exhibit regularly in Cambridge Open Studios in July each year and twice yearly with the Cambridge Drawing Society in April and October.

At other times I am happy to arrange an appointment to see the full range of my work at St Barnabas Press in Cambridge.
